Piaggio Avanti, Eagle, Colo., Jan. 15, 2007–The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control of the Avanti on landing was the cause of the accident, according to the NTSB. The ATP-rated pilot landed on Runway 25 at Eagle County Regional Airport and as he reduced power and started to select reverse thrust, the airplane swerved and he corrected with rudder. The right tire blew out and he lost directional control, running off the asphalt into a snow bank. The airplane went off the 8,000-foot runway at the 5,000-foot mark, leaving a 1,664-foot skid mark. The left wingtip was crushed and the composite forward lifting surface was fractured. The sole-occupant pilot was not injured.
