The preliminary NTSB report on Saturday afternoon’s fatal Citation crash in Conway, Ark., in which the pilot attempted to take off from Runway 26 at Conway Municipal Airport after landing long, is expected by the end of the week, according to NTSB investigator Andrew Todd Fox. Pilot Ira Hugh Rains, 71, and Janet Brady, of Conway, were killed after the Citation 500 went through a jet blast deflector, crossed a culvert and crashed into Brady’s house. Brady’s husband and a passenger in the airplane survived. Conway Mayor Tab Townsell said pilots must land long on the runway because of the 1,643-foot displaced threshold, “to avoid clipping structures on the ground.” According to the NTSB, however, the threshold is valid only at night, and the crash occurred during the day. Rains was certified as a commercial pilot. The accident was the third fatal Citation crash in two months and the fourth this year.
