At about 11:30 a.m. today a Merlin SA226T registered to Maci Leasing of Edison, N.J., crashed at Teterboro Airport, N.J. The twin turboprop came to rest at the south end of Runway 1 facing south. A fire ignited but it was extinguished within 15 minutes, according to officials. The pilot, the only person aboard, was taken to a nearby hospital with undisclosed injuries. He was described as being in “fair condition” by a hospital spokeswoman. The FAA reported the airplane was on final approach to Runway 1 when the pilot radioed he had engine problems. Airport operations were temporarily suspended while a preliminary investigation was underway and construction equipment was cleared to enable aircraft to use Runway 6/24. The accident is the fourth this year at the beleaguered airport. On February 2, nearly a dozen people on the ground and six in a Challenger 600 were injured when the aircraft hit a warehouse after going off the end of Runway 6 during an aborted takeoff. On March 8, a Hawker 700A slid off Runway 1 during its landing roll and on March 11, a Beechjet 400 overran a runway during an aborted takeoff. There were no injuries in the latter two incidents.
