Transport Canada announced last month that Montreal Dorval Airport will be officially renamed Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport to honor Canada’s former prime minister. The name change won’t take effect, however, until January 1, and the YUL identifier will be retained. Trudeau, who served as PM from 1968 to 1979 and then again from 1980 to 1984, died from cancer on Sept. 28, 2000, at the age of 80. The name Dorval dates back to 1666 and a community named after a settler who owned land on which the airport would later be built. Dorval became a city in 1956 and was merged into Montreal last year.
