German completion and refurbishment giant Lufthansa Technik is building a research and development center for its cabin innovation business division in Hamburg. The company estimates the investment at about $15.4 million. In addition to offices, the center will contain testing laboratories and display areas for new products under development. “We are paving the way for the long-term growth of the [cabin innovation] business unit,” said Lufthansa Technik chairman of the board Wilhelm Henningsen. The design will incorporate modular and solid structures with a front constructed using a thermal insulation composite material. Five stories will contain a total area of more than 21,300 sq ft. Completion is expected this fall and a move into the new building is scheduled to begin as early as December.
