A Luxair Fokker 50 twin turboprop crashed on approach to Luxembourg Findel Airport on November 6, killing 20 of the 22 people on board. The accident happened just after 10 a.m. in thick fog, with the aircraft crashing into wooded, hilly terrain three miles short of the runway and on the edge of the village of Roodt-Syr.

According to Luxembourg aviation authorities, visibility around the airport was officially reported as being 100 meters (328 ft). Accident investigation officials will be able to interview one of the two Fokker 50 pilots, who was among the two survivors.

According to an airport spokesman, the Luxair crew had been cleared to land by tower controllers. An airline spokesman added that there had been no distress call from the cockpit.

According to the operator, the Fokker 50 had undergone “technical checks” the day before the crash. Luxair temporarily suspended operations of its other three F50s to allow time for further inspections.

uxair Flight 9642 (codeshare with Lufthansa as Flight 2420) was arriving at Luxembourg from Berlin Tempelhof Airport. The Fokker 50 entered service with the operator in June 1991. In addition to the F50s, Luxair flies seven Embraer ERJ-145s and five Boeing 737s.
