Just a few months after her estranged husband was fatally shot along with eight other members of the Nepalese royal family, Princess Prekshya Shah, 49, was killed when a helicopter in which she was a passenger plunged into a lake in Nepal shortly after takeoff on November 12. The pilot of the Eurocopter AS 350 AStar, Rabin Karer, and two of the four other passengers, family friends Iswor Basent and Dan Bahadur, were also killed in the accident. Hospitalized were Dr. Rishi Khatri, a physician, and royal aide Sharada Singh. Nepalese officials said in a statement that the rotorcraft failed to gain altitude after taking off and crashed in Rara Lake, about 310 mi west of the Himalayan country’s capital, Katmandu. Princess Prekshya’s husband was gunned down by Crown Prince Dipendra, along with Napalese King Birendra, Queen Aiswarya and six other members of the royal family in what was probably the worst case of regicide since the assassination of the Russian royal family in 1918.
