Beech King Air 300, Houston, Texas, May 18, 2003–At 9:30 a.m. CDT King Air N2SM was substantially damaged during a positioning flight when it overran Runway 33 at West Houston Airport, Texas. The sole-occupant ATP-rated pilot received minor injuries. N2SM was registered to OSO-RIO LLC of Houston. The aircraft departed William P. Hobby Airport 30 minutes before the accident, with Las Vegas as its final destination. VMC prevailed at the time of the accident and no flight plan was filed.
The pilot reported that as he performed the landing roll at an indicated airspeed of approximately 95 knots, the airplane went 45 degrees to the right. He added power to the right engine to align the airplane with the runway centerline but stated that the airplane “felt as if it had no brakes.” N2SM continued traveling down the 4,000-foot runway at approximately 55 knots and veered to the right a second time. The pilot told investigators he again added right engine power in an attempt to align the airplane with the runway centerline, causing it to veer to the left. It came to rest in a ditch located approximately 20 feet beyond the departure end of Runway 33. Weather is not considered to be a factor.
