Sherwin-Williams has developed a flexible epoxy-based putty designed for aerospace applications such as filling rivets, seams and spot repair areas on aircraft exteriors. Drying time for the new Fill Bond putty is two to six hours, significantly faster than the typical six to eight hours for competing products, according to Sherwin-Williams. Fill Bond contains no chrome or lead and comes in two different application methods: a manual or pneumatic twin-tube cartridge-dispensing gun. The gun allows users to apply the correct amount of putty required without excess waste. And the entire cartridge does not need to be used but can be capped for later application. Unlike products adapted from automotive or marine uses, “Fill Bond is extremely flexible,” according to Sherwin-Williams, and “offers direct-to-metal adhesion (with properly treated aluminum), provides excellent spreadability and offers a long workable pot life to give users the right amount of time to apply material on a variety of aircraft surfaces, including aluminum and composites.”
