Mitsubishi MU-2B-60, Millington, Tenn., Dec. 9, 2008–The right engine of the MU-2 lost power after the airplane took off from Millington Regional Jetport (NQA), where the ATP-rated pilot had flown to buy fuel. The aircraft had been held on the ground twice by ATC while storm cells passed. After takeoff, about 2.5 miles from home base, Charles W. Baker Airport, Millington, the engine quit. As the torque dropped to about 40 percent, the pilot decided to feather the propeller. He told ATC he wanted to return to NQA. The wind and wind shear increased, and the airplane encountered heavy rain. The pilot was able to maintain only altitudes between 1,000 feet and 1,400 feet due to turbulence, although he said that he felt the airplane “conformed to standards.” He made the approach at about 105 knots, instead of the normal 100 knots, and landed partway down the runway before veering off the left side.
