Aircell Unveils Stand-alone Airborne High-speed Internet

Airborne communications provider Aircell today unveiled its new ATG 5000 high-speed Internet unit for the business aviation market. The lightweight, “affordable” system delivers high-speed Internet service via the Aircell network and was designed specifically for aircraft operators who don’t require the integrated voice, narrowband data and network neutral capabilities of the company’s Axxess cabin system. “Developed largely in response to customer feedback, the ATG 5000 is an efficient installation for customers who want stand-alone high-speed Internet service aboard their aircraft,” noted Aircell senior vice president and general manager John Wade. According to the company, the ATG 5000 provides broadband connection speeds that are up to 56 times faster than a traditional dial-up connection. The ATG 5000 can be “easily added” to any existing installation, which Aircell said reduces downtime and installation costs. Aircell added that–because of its combination of features, light weight and small antennas–the new system is ideal for light business jets and turboprops. Shipments of the $85,000 (not including installation) ATG 5000 units will start in December.
