Scott’s Helicopter of Le Sueur, Minn., has acquired the type certificate and assumed all aspects of commercial spares support, technical support and continued airworthiness for the FAA type-certified Bell 47 (H-1, 2H1, and 2H3). Henceforth the aircraft will be known as “Scott’s-Bell 47.” The Bell 47 made its first flight on Dec. 8, 1945, and Bell and its licensees built more than 5,600 before production ended in 1974. The 47 was the first helicopter certified by the FAA, the first used by all branches of U.S. armed forces, the first helicopter used as a gunship, to cross the Swiss Alps, carry a U.S. president, and the first to spray crops. NASA used the 47 as a lunar module training aid for Apollo astronauts.
