After two previous candidates withdrew their names from consideration, the Transportation Security Administration finally welcomed its new boss on Friday when the Senate confirmed former FBI deputy director John Pistole as TSA administrator. The Department of Homeland Security agency has been without a permanent administrator since President Obama took office. Although the TSA’s highest profile is in aviation security matters, it is also tasked with rail and trucking safety and security. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.), chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, called Pistole “a well qualified and urgently needed nominee.” Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), the ranking Republican on the Senate committee, said the new administrator must make sure the agency is able to meet an ongoing threat. “We know from hard experience that attacking America remains the goal of our terrorist enemies,” she said.
