Essential Flight Technology and NavWorx have joined to make the Pads WxBox, a portable ADS-B receiver designed to deliver free weather information to mobile devices. Pads WxBox will work with iOS (Apple), Android and Windows mobile devices wirelessly via Bluetooth or with a USB cable. The device will provide Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) over the 978 MHz UAT datalink via the growing network of ADS-B ground stations in the U.S. Full coverage is planned for next year, although the network currently serves both the East and West coasts, most of the southern U.S., the area east of the Mississippi River and parts of Alaska. FIS-B weather products include Nexrad, Airmets, Sigmets, Metars, TAFs, Pireps, Notams, winds and temperatures aloft and special-use airspace. The iPad version should ship by August and sells for an introductory price (through August 1) of $795.
