Runway Rehab at Van Nuys Nearing Completion

Construction on the first section (north end) of the main runway at Van Nuys Airport is expected to be completed this month. The $20 million renovation project, which began in February, aims to rehabilitate and modernize the 8,000-foot Runway 16R/34L to meet current FAA design standards. Scheduled to conclude at the end of August, the project is being conducted in three stages (north, south, center) and includes the mill and overlay of 4,400 feet of the runway’s center section, repairs to the existing concrete runway ends, installation of a new blast fence, reconstruction of runway and shoulder pavements, new pavement markings and high-speed exit light modifications. According to airport authorities, the improvements will ensure a 20-year runway lifespan. Operations on the airport’s parallel 4,000-foot Runway 16L/34R remain unaffected during the repairs.
