Content Body

PS Engineering has added “IntelliAudio” dimensional sound to its new PMA450 audio panel. Based on research conducted by the U.S. Air Force’s Wright Patterson Air Force Laboratory and licensed by PS Engineering, IntelliAudio allows the pilot to select where various audio inputs will sound as though they are coming from in the headset. For example, com 1 and 2 can be set in any of nine separate positions, so each audio source sounds separate and unique.

The advantage of this dimensional sound is that it makes it easier for the pilot to listen to a primary frequency with ATC on that audio source while monitoring another frequency with ATIS. During a test of the system, I found it easy to pay attention to ATC while listening to ATIS but ignored the ATIS information when a new ATC call came through.

The PMA450 includes PS Engineering’s IntelliVox automatic squelch control, Bluetooth interface, three switched inputs that can be custom labeled for various types of alerts and it is plug ’n’ play compatible with the Garmin GMA340. The PMA450 also adds a handy front-mounted USB port for device charging. With a marker beacon receiver, the TSO’d PMA450 retails for $2,395.
