Wireless cabin communications system provider Axnes is working with Saab to earn a supplemental type certificate (STC) for its new PNG wireless intercom system in the AW139, the company announced during Heli-Expo. The two companies are looking to develop an installation kit that would allow existing AW139 operators to retrofit them with the PNG system, which enables crews to maintain full duplex communication when leaving the platform while in line-of-sight range. It can be configured to work with any existing ICS or helmet/headset combination, and according to the manufacturer, it is designed to qualify for all relevant aerial, maritime and ground vehicle platforms, both civilian and military.
“Axnes is extremely pleased that the highly rated defense and security company Saab is taking the steps to bring our new enhanced products into the Leonardo AW139,” said Trygve Sten Gustavsen, CEO of the Norway-based company. “The AW139 is one of the most important and popular airframes in the medium-twin category, widely utilized within offshore, ambulance and rescue services worldwide. Most of these aircraft have Axnes’ former product line installed, and Saab’s effort will give these operators easy access to our new and improved technology and safety-enhancing features.”
