Citing rising demand for widebody completions, maintenance and refurbishment services, Jet Aviation is about to begin construction on a new 93,646-sq-ft (8,700-sq-m) hangar at its Basel, Switzerland, MRO facility. The new structure, known as Hangar 3 and slated for completion by the end of 2018, will replace the existing Hangars 3 and 4, will increase hangar space at the location by nearly 50,000 sq ft (4,550 sq m) and add 21,000 sq ft (2,000 sq m) of shops and offices. It will be able to house a number of narrow-, and widebody aircraft at the same time, up to a Boeing 747. The General Dynamics subsidiary’s project will also extend its ramp by nearly 54,000 sq ft (5,000 sq m).
“This significant investment in new infrastructure is a clear demonstration of Jet Aviation’s commitment to meeting customer needs around the world,” said Neil Boyle, senior vice president of completions and general manager of site operations in Basel. “It will enable us to be more flexible in scheduling current and future workloads to satisfy the expectations of our clients.”
Despite the scope of the project, the company promises disruptions at the site will be kept at a minimum for both customers and employees, as it has leased additional hangar and shop space at the airport to help maintain capacity and capabilities.
Among the aircraft projects currently scheduled at the site are the conversions of a pair of Embraer Legacys into medevac and VIP charter configuration; a Legacy 600 for an Asian customer; and a Legacy 650 for an operator in the Middle East.
