With the reconstruction of its primary runway last taking place back in 1979, Manhattan Regional Airport in Kansas (KMHK) has just completed the first phase of the rebuild of Runway 3/21. For the start of the second phase of construction, the airport will be closed entirely from March 28 through March 30, and again from May 12 through July 19 for Phase 3 intersection work, after which 5,000-foot Runway 13/31 will reopen.
The $30 million project, which began last September will see the demolition, removal of concrete, and rebuilding of the 7,000-foot-long runway; the reconstruction of the intersections of Runway 13/31, Taxiways A, B, C, and F, and the removal of Taxiway E; as well as the installation of new lights, signage, markings, and navigation aids. All but $3 million of the project will be covered by federal funding.
The project is expected to conclude at the beginning of September with the rededication of Runway 3/21.
