Content Body

Garmin’s Team X introduced two new avionics products for the experimental amateur-built market: the G5 electronic standby instrument and the GMA 245/245R audio panels.

The G5 features a 3.5-inch sunlight-readable display and it fits into a standard 3.125-inch instrument panel hole. An optional four-hour backup battery is available; with the battery the G5 measures three inches deep, or 2.1 inches without the battery. The new instrument can be installed either as a standby for Garmin G3X or other EFIS systems or as a primary flight instrument with optional autopilot mode annunciation. The G5 can also serve as part of a standalone autopilot solution, according to Garmin, “when paired with Garmin’s GMC 307 or 305 autopilot mode controllers and GSA 28 autopilot servos.” Price for the G5 is $1,199, and it will be available in April. The optional back-up battery should be available in June for $150. An internal GPS antenna is included, or an optional external antenna is available as well.

The G5 displays attitude, ground track, altitude, airspeed, groundspeed, vertical speed, slip/skid, course (lateral) deviation, vertical deviation, and it includes a dedicated HSI page. When coupled with the G3X/G3x Touch displays, the G5’s ADAHRS can provide data to the G3X in case of failure of that unit’s ADAHRS. The G3X can also supply heading information from its magnetometer to the G5, and G3X airspeed bugs and barometric settings can be synched with the G5.

Meanwhile, the new GMA 245/245R Bluetooth audio panels offer “superior sound quality,” according to Garmin, and feature advanced auto squelch and equalizer settings, music bass boost, 3-D audio and wireless integration with Garmin’s Virb XE action camera. The GMA 245 is a panel-mount version, while the 245R installs remotely and interfaces with G3X displays.

Both the GMA 245 and 245R include a six-place stereo intercom and support for up to three music inputs, plus a digital clearance recorder that records up to 60 seconds of com radio transmissions.

The GMA 245 will be available in May and is priced at $1,325, while the 245R begins shipping in April and retails for $1,199. Both are rack-and-pin-compatible with the GMA 240 and 340 and third-party audio panels for experimental aircraft, according to Garmin.
