The heads of six major aviation alphabet organizations have urged congressional leaders to increase funding for unleaded aviation gasoline in the Alternative Fuels for General Aviation program.
In a letter this week to the chairs and ranking members of the House and Senate’s Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Subcommittee and Urban Development Subcommittee Committees on Appropriations, the leadership of NBAA, NATA, GAMA, AOPA, HAI, and EAA stated their belief that the fuel testing program is at a critical stage. They requested that as the legislators finalize their budget allocations for fiscal year 2022, they provide $10 million in funding to the program, which supports the fuel research and safety certification needed to allow for a fleet-wide approval and rollout of safe unleaded avgas.
“The funding level is consistent with the spirit of the recent White House announcement on sustainable aviation fuels, where the work on alternative fuels for general aviation was highlighted,” the organizations noted. “There is still considerable work to be done to address the environmental and regulatory challenges associated with piston aviation fuels, and your support is key to addressing them in a way that does not compromise aviation safety.”
