Description

This action proposes new FAR Part 38, fuel efficiency metric requirements for certification of certain subsonic jet and turboprop airplanes. Depending on the dates of an airplane's original type certification application and issuance of its first certificate of airworthiness, as well as its in-production dates, Part 38 would apply to virtually all jet models with a mtow greater than 12,566 pounds and all turboprop models with a mtow of greater than 19,000 pounds. In-service aircraft models that are no longer in production are exempt. These requirements would implement the emissions standards adopted by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2021, allowing manufacturers to certificate their aircraft for fuel efficiency to fulfill statutory obligations of the FAA under the Clean Air Act. The deadline for comments is Aug. 15, 2022.
