Description
In a final rule, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is replacing the existing smoke standard on civil subsonic jet airplanes with engine outputs rated greater than 26.7 kilonewtons (more than 6,609 pounds thrust) with particle matter (PM) standards. The standards for in-production engines apply to those that are manufactured on or after January 1, 2023. The standards for new type designs apply to those whose initial type certification application is submitted on or after Jan. 1, 2023. However, the EPA is maintaining smoke number standards for engines not covered by the PM mass concentration standard (e.g., in-production aircraft turbofan and turbojet engines with rated output less than or equal to 26.7 kN).
